Pilates Equipment: Here’s What You Need To Get Started

So, you’ve decided to start Pilates. That’s a great step in your journey to a healthier body. However, just like with any new activity or exercise, it’s time to go shopping and stock up on everything you need to get started with your new found routine.

Read on to learn more about what you’ll need to purchase… from the essentials to the more expensive add-ons that will complete your approach to Pilates.

The Attire

Firstly, you’ll need to think about what you’re going to wear while doing Pilates. You’ll need to invest in comfortable, flexible, form fitting clothes that will not slip around as you perform the variety of movements and positions during your Pilates workout.

Additionally, it’s also recommended that any clothing you choose should have visible seams. This is so that you can ensure your body is properly aligned, well balanced and that you’re not leaning one way or another.

Shoes are not worn during Pilates, so you won’t need any specific kind. If you don’t like to be barefoot – especially if you’re attending a class rather than doing Pilates at home – you may choose to wear thin, barrier socks, provided they have adequate traction.

As well as attire, you’ll probably want to have all your bases covered with ‘accessories’, such as a water bottle to keep you well hydrated throughout your workout.

The Basics

After you’ve chosen what to wear, it’s time to move on to what you’ll actually need to get started. If you’re looking to begin Pilates at the gym, you’ll find that they’ll provide everything you need. However, if you’re getting into Pilates at home, you’ll require a few items.

Unless you’re lucky enough to have a personal Pilates trainer come to your home, you’ll need to have a quality pilates DVD – as well as setting up a device to play it on. In most cases, this will be the space in your living room in front of the TV. If so, there’s no need to purchase anything else.

The only other absolute essential is a mat. This gives you a comfortable base for your workout. It should be big enough to support the size of your body and be at least 12mm thick to ensure proper cushioning and comfort during Pilates.

Other basics may include a foam roller and / or a Pilates ring - all of which can be easily purchased online.

The Add-Ons

If you want to take things a little further, step up your Pilates game and develop even more significant effects from your workouts, you should consider a Pilates Reformer (also known as a Pilates machine) or Trapeze Table.

These will give you the opportunity to expand your Pilates repertoire and build even more strength.
